TIPS TO SAIL THROUGH SMOOTH SUMMER IN CHILDREN

In India, summer could be unbearable. Also many viral infections are spread during spring i.e. beginning of summer. We definitely do not want our children to fall sick, especially during final exams in the summer. These are the tips to sail through smooth summer.

1. Plenty of liquids. To avoid heat stroke and dehydration, it is imperative to give children lots and lots of water and healthy liquids frequently. Do avoid carbonated and sugary liquids as these may lead to more dehydration.

2. Comfortable clothing. It is important that we do not overdo clothing in summer. Single layer of thin breathable cotton would suffice.

3. Protection from Sun. Sun can cause irreparable damage to the skin. Wearing sunscreen with SPF above 15, half an hour before going out in the Sun and repeat application after 4 hrs, could lessen the damaging effects of Sun. Wearing caps, hats goggles could also help. It is better to avoid sun exposure from 11 am to 3 pm.

4. Prevention of illnesses. Avoid street food completely. Outside juices, milkshakes, ice-creams, faloodas could be an invitation for water and food borne diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid, hepatits A and E. Frequent hand washing, before and after food should be followed.

5. Avoid strenuous exercises outdoor. Keep sipping water frequently during exercise.

6. Do not leave children unattended in the parked car. The temperature inside the car parked in the Sun can reach 46 degrees Celsius in an hour, and could prove fatal for the child trapped inside.
